The awards ceremony will be held on Sat. Dec. 7th at the Clemson University Madren Center. The contest was a statewide effort to make young people aware of fire safety issues. This year's theme was "Team Up for Fire Safety," according to Sarah Dubose, fire safety education coordinator for Clemson Extension. Independent Insurance Agents of South Carolina, the S.C. State Firemen's Association and the S.C. Farm Bureau Insurance Companies, along with Clemson Extension, sponsored the contest. First place received $100 and a trophy; second place received $50 and a trophy. Schools received a trophy, and first place winning teachers received $50 for their classrooms. Students from grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 competed in poster or creative writing categories. First place in creative writing were: Katie Pufpaff, Greenville County, Plain Elementary School (K-2); Emily Crosby, Georgetown County, Black River Elementary School (3-5); Mary Pat Bradshaw, Georgetown County, Low County Day School (6-8); Cory O'Tuel, Marlboro County, Marlboro Academy (9-12). Second place: Diaudra Smith, Union County Monarch Elementary School(K-2); Tyler Hargett, Spartanburg County, Boiling Springs Elementary School (3-5); Katie Newell, Dillon County, Lake View Middle School(6-8); Eboni-Shanielle Wafford, Cherokee County, Gaffney Sr. High School (9-12). First place poster art winners: Phillip Shuler, Sumter County, Wilson Hall Elementary School (K-2); Charlotte Jackson, Marlboro County, Marlboro Academy (3-5); Joey Nelson, Charleston County, Cario Middle School (6-8); Jamie Preston, Clarendon County, Manning High School (9-12).
