More than 170 4-H'ers represented almost half of the state's 46 counties participated in the 2003 program. The program is designed to teach the principles of wildlife management through the planting of food plots and observing conditions and events surrounding the project. Each contestant is provided instructions, a sample record book and a five-pound bag of seed. The 4-H'ers are responsible for preparing and planting their wildlife food plots and required to keep a record of plot growth and wildlife visitation. State wildlife department biologists and technicians judge the wildlife food plot and record book at the end of the growing season. Contestants are not eligible for awards without preparing a record book. "The amount of hard work and dedication shown by the participants' record books this year was exceptional. Extension agents and 4-H volunteers deserve a great deal of credit for recruiting youth for this program and providing instruction on record book preparation," said Rick Willey, 4-H natural resource specialist with the Clemson University Extension Service.
