CLEMSON - Imagine trying to succeed in a high school where you don't speak the language very well and you don't understand the culture. That's exactly what most Hispanic students struggle to overcome every day. Thanks to Clemson 4-H, Latino students from Southside High School in Greenville will get the help they need to succeed. On Feb. 18 and 19 the "7-Habits of Successful Teens" workshop will be presented in Spanish to more than 100 Hispanic students attending Southside. "Clemson has always had a very strong tie to the community; so it's a natural fit that 4-H would come into the schools to help kids learn skills they can carry with them for life," said Belita Broadus, counselor at Southside. The free program uses the "7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" philosophy and is based on the book by Sean Covey. It promotes respect, responsibility and achievement in young adults. Premier Agendas, a school specialty company that helps students learn time management and responsibility, makes the workshop possible. The company provides student workshops all over the United States and Canada. The one-day workshop uses interactive activities and focuses on positive thinking. The Southside program will teach 50 students on Feb 18 and 50 more on Feb. 19. The 7-Habits instructor, Kelly McWilliams, spent years in Costa Rica and is bilingual in Spanish and English. "These workshops are made possible by the generosity of a dedicated 4-H and Clemson supporter, who prefers to remain anonymous," said Bob Lippert, 4-H youth educator and Latino liaison. "Thanks to this donor, approximately 2,000 South Carolina teens will benefit from these leadership workshops. This is yet another example of how Clemson Public Service multiples its value to South Carolina."
