CLEMSON - Imagine trying to succeed in a high school where you don't speak the language very well, and you don't understand the culture. That's exactly what most Hispanic students struggle to overcome every day. Thanks to Clemson 4-H, Latino students from Walhalla Middle School will get the help they need to succeed. On March 3 and 4, the "7-Habits of Successful Teens" workshop will be presented in Spanish to more than 96 Hispanic students attending the middle school. "Meeting the needs of the Hispanic students in our school is a challenge for us due to the language and cultural differences. We feel that the Hispanic Outreach Program offered by Clemson Extension will be extremely valuable to help meet needs of our students," said Mary Schulenburg, Walhalla Middle School guidance counselor. Guidance Counselor Becky Flowers agrees. "This program will help shape their self-image, self-esteem and develop their potential. We feel it is critical to partner with the community in promoting cultural awareness and understanding." The free program uses the "7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" philosophy and is based on the book by Sean Covey. It promotes respect, responsibility and achievement in young adults. Premier Agendas, a school specialty company that helps students learn time management and responsibility, makes the workshop possible. The company provides student workshops all over the United States and Canada. The one-day workshop, which begins at 8:30 a.m., uses interactive activities and focuses on positive thinking. The Walhalla program will teach 50 students on March 3 and 50 more on March 4. The 7-Habits instructor, Kelly McWilliams, spent years in Costa Rica and is bilingual in Spanish and English. "These workshops are made possible by the generosity of a dedicated 4-H and Clemson supporter, who prefers to remain anonymous," said Bob Lippert, 4-H youth educator and Latino liaison. "Thanks to this donor, approximately 2,000 South Carolina teens will benefit from these leadership workshops. This is yet another example of how Clemson Public Service multiples its value to South Carolina."
