* Clemson 4-H wildlife team places sixth at nationals CLEMSON – The South Carolina 4-H Wildlife Team placed sixth at the 2004 National 4-H Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program (WHEP) Contest. The South Carolina team from Charleston County went up against other states from around the nation July 28- Aug.1, at Virginia Tec in Blacksburg . Team members were Tyler Huff, Joel Campbell, Justin Steedly, Andrew Dendle. In addition, Joel Campbell finished second in the wildlife foods portion of the contest, and the team took third on their urban management plan. "Much of the credit goes to their coaches Betty Osgood, 4-H volunteer, and Chip Boling, Clemson Extension agent. South Carolina and Clemson University should be very proud of the representation shown by this team,” said Rick Willey, Clemson Extension 4-H natural resources specialist. “They worked extremely hard and deserve the success they experienced.” The competition had segments on wildlife food, aerial photography, oral reasoning, and rural and urban wildlife management plans. The 4-H WHEP contest is an educational and competitive program designed to teach youths the fundamentals of wildlife management. Participants learn that management for wildlife means providing the food, water, cover and space necessary to enhance wildlife habitat. The program has an in depth wildlife management manual associated with it and is an excellent resource for educators. For more information on the 4-H WHEP contest or other activities in the 4-H Natural Resource program, contact the Extension office in your county or visit the National WHEP web site at http://www.whep.org/.
