Unlike Britain, however, South Carolina has not had the same land tenure practices that encouraged the strong local and national tree protection programs taken there. For these reasons, local governments are addressing urban forestry issues in voluntary and legislated ways with varying degrees of success. This discussion will include a visiting landscape architect and an arborist from England to explain initiatives taken in the English countryside to preserve and enhance tree cover. The panel will include a South Carolina developer, advocate and elected official to discuss options and issues for implementing tree protection programs in South Carolina. It promises to be lively and informative. Panelists include: Ms. Miriam Addy, Landscape Architect, OCA UK, Limited, Colchester, England Mr. David Agnew, Principal, Civitas LLC, Charleston, SC Ms. Diane Eldridge, Dir. of Education & Advocacy, Upstate Forever, Greenville, SC Dr. Dealga O'Callaghan, Consulting Arborist, OCA UK, Limited, Liverpool, England Mr. Clint Wright, Anderson County Council Chair, Anderson, SC Sponsors: The South Carolina Forestry Commission; Institute for Economic and Community Development, Clemson University; Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Clemson University; Strom Thurmond Institute of Government and Public Affairs, Clemson University Students and professionals in planning, landscape architecture, architecture, forestry, horticulture, economic development, natural resources, environmental engineering and others interested in a sensible balance between urban development and urban tree cover.
