YOUTH LEARNING INSTITUTE (YLI) ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS FOR SUMMER CAMP Do you know a child between the ages of 8 and 16 who would enjoy and benefit from a week or two at summer camp? Clemson University's Youth Learning Institute (YLI) has four educational and recreational co-ed summer camps that would appeal to a variety of children. All are residential (overnight) camps that last for about a week each. A two-week option is available for some camps. They include adventures in marine science, high-tech adventure, traditional summer camp, and one devoted to shooting sports, wildlife and outdoor skills. The camps are: Camp Sewee (Marine Science). Awendaw. Ages 8-16. Sunday-Friday sessions, June 6-July 30. Cost, $355/session. Campers explore marine science and the South Carolina coast and are divided into groups based on age and experience. Activities include an island ecology study, a salt-marsh study, crabbing, kayaking, swimming, a fouling lab, night hikes, Raptor Rehabilitation Center demonstrations, orienteering, plant identification, and trips to a water park and the S.C. Aquarium. Camp Voyager (High-Tech Adventure). Summerton. Ages 10-14. June 6-July 23. $495/weekly. Best described as an interactive camp of the future, Camp Voyager brings together the best of traditional camping programs with the latest technology and an exploration theme. Campers will work as a team to progress through their adventure by using technology such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), personal digital assistants (PDAs), desktop computers and applicable software, as well as building and operating simple machines like water pumps and solar-powered devices. Campers will also capture video and pictures with digital cameras and camcorders to be edited and arranged on state-of-the-art computers. It will be very similar to the concept shared by many popular video games today, where the player acquires resources and learns how to use them in order to progress. Camp Wildlife (Shooting, Wildlife and Outdoor Skills). Clinton. Ages 8-16. Sunday-Friday sessions, June 6-July 23. $365/weekly; $795/2-week session (June 20-July 2). Campers are divided based on age and experience. Emphasis is on developing knowledge and skills related to shooting sports, hunting and hunting safety, swimming, wildlife ecology, wildlife management, team sports, night hikes, outdoor survival, and ATV operation and safety. Summer 4-H Camp. Clinton. Ages 8-16. June 6-July 23. $295/weekly; $550/2-week session (June 20-July 2 or July 11-23). (Do not have to be a 4-H member to participate). Campers participate in traditional camping activities during the day, such as swimming, arts and crafts, canoeing, teams course, recreation and team sports, archery, air rifles, fishing, climbing walls and more. At night, campers will come together for camp-wide activities designed to encourage camaraderie and friendship, such as a carnival, a dance, a talent show and nightly campfires.
