Richard D. Willey will receive the Award for Communications Conservation Jan. 24 at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston during the Federation's awards banquet. "Rick exhibits tremendous enthusiasm for youth, environmental and outdoor recreation opportunities and issues. He is willing to learn and try new ideas and has found and fortified an exceedingly proficient volunteer and professional staff," said Angela Viney, executive director of the South Carolina Wildlife Federation. The Federation has recognized outstanding contributions to conservation for 39 years. Since its founding by sportsmen in 1931, the organization has maintained a diverse membership and sustained its role as a voice in conservation. Willey has been the South Carolina Resource Specialist for the past three years. He conducts workshops that teach children about general wildlife, predator-prey relationships, snakes, hunting ethics and shooting sports. He also heads the 4-H Shooting Sports Program in South Carolina along with the 4-H Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program, the 4-H Food and Cover Establishment Program and the 4-H Wildlife ID contest. Willey's 4-H Natural Resource program sponsors the National Hunting and Fishing Day, 4-H Senior Teen Weekend, State 4-H Congress, 4-H Horse Camp, state and county fair programs, Camp Wildlife and Duck's Unlimited Greenwing events. He also developed a Backyard Wildlife Habitat® at a local nursing home as part of a service program for the State 4-H Congress. Willey lives in Pendleton with his wife and two sons. END
