SIEVERDES RECOGNIZED FOR SERVICE
TO UNIVERSITY, COMMUNITY

CLEMSON -- Clemson University community and economic
development professor Chris Sieverdes received the Algernon
Sydney Sullivan Award in recognition of his service to the
university and the community.

The award is given to two graduating seniors and one
non-student for maintaining high ideals of living and
genuine service to others.

Sieverdes has been a Clemson faculty member for 26 years.
His focus is on community and leadership development, and he
has been helping shape Clemson students and community
members into effective leaders for years.

Under Sieverdes' direction, the nationally and
internationally recognized community leadership program
Palmetto Leadership has expanded from four counties with 160
participants to 37 counties with 4,200 participants.

Sieverdes has served as adviser to Clemson's Blue Key
chapter since 1987. He has been named as the top Blue Key
adviser in the nation, and Clemson's chapter has been
recognized as one of the nation's top chapters five out of
the past six years. Sieverdes also took the initiative to
reorganize Blue Key's national office and was elected
president and executive director of the organization, and
the international Blue Key headquarters was moved to
Clemson. Sieverdes has headed the Blue Key National
Leadership Conference for the past two years and has
provided leadership training to Blue Key chapter leaders and
advisers from across the nation.

Sieverdes served as adviser to Tiger Brotherhood for three
years. During that time, Tiger Brotherhood changed from an
all-male organization to a co-educational one. Sieverdes
also has served on the City of Clemson Planning Commission,
as secretary of Faculty Senate and on several other city and
university committees. He was recognized earlier this year
by the Clemson-Calhoun Rotary Club with the Vocational
Service Award.

Sievderdes has been recognized by the Clemson Alumni
Association with its highest awards for teaching and public
service. He received the Alumni Master Teacher Award in 1985
and a Distinguished Service Award in 1996.
