Clemson Extension offers 4-H kid sew summer classes

GREENVILLE – Youth who would like to learn how to sew and parents who are looking for a supervised learning activity for their child will have the opportunity to register for the”4-H Kid Sew Summer Series” in Greenville.

Classes are small with only one student per sewing machine.

“So register early,” said Elizabeth Hill, Clemson Extension agent, who teaches the classes.

The cost of each class includes all equipment and supplies unless otherwise noted in the class description. Prepaid registration is required. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. For registration information call (864) 232-4431.

Choose one or all of the following classes:

Earn Your Sewing Machine License* -- This course is a prerequisite for classes with an *, unless the student has participated previously in a 4-H Kids Sew Class.

Cost is $3 for ages 9 and above.

Time is 9 a.m. to noon .

This class is for all youth new to the world of sewing. To be successful participants must know the equipment and learn to use it safely. Students will learn the parts of the machine, learn to thread the machine, do practice sewing, and make a small item. There are three opportunities to take this class.

For the classes listed below, students should bring a bag lunch to class. Light refreshments will be provided for breaks.

Pillow Power*

Wednesday, July 6

Cost: $20

Ages 9-12

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What do neck bones, the alphabet, and squares have in common? They are all different types of pillows. Participants will make a variety of pillows for use in their room or the family room.

Tangled Threads

Thursday and Friday, July 7 and 8

Ages 10-14

Cost: $20

Time: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Knitting is all the rage with young people across the nation. Learn how to make tangled threads come alive with knitting needles.

Patchwork Puzzle*

Monday, July 11

Ages 9 to 12

Cost: $20

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pretty pieces of fabric come together to create patchwork treasures in this workshop. Students will learn to master straight even seams as they make a patchwork pillow and wall hanging.

Off to the Beach*

Wednesday, July 13

Ages 9 to 12

Cost: $27.50

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Make a big splash at the pool or the beach this summer with your own special beach bag, sun visor and flip flops and billow. (Beach Pillow).

It’s in the Bag*

Thursday, July 14

Ages 9 to 12

Cost: $20

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fabric purses and totes are all the fashion rage. In this class you will learn how to make your own fashion statement making a purse and a tote bag.

Fun, Fab and Fantastic

Accessories 1

Friday, July 15

Ages 9 to 12

Cost: $15

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Learn to make fun accessories such as fab hair scrunchies, ribbon belt, yo-yo pin and a mini purse. Beginner sewing skills are all you need.

Floral Denim Purse

Monday, July 18

Ages 11 to 14

Cost: $15

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Denim is a fashion basic. Students will make their own denim hand bag and embellish it with fabric and fancy stitches.

Create Your Own Fabric

Wednesday, July 20

Ages 11 to 14

Cost: $18

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Stamps, stencils, and household odds and ends will be used to create graphic designs on fabric that will be made into a pillow. Students will also create a one of a kind tote bag to reflect their personal style.

Floral Machine Appliqué

Wall Hanging*

Thursday, July 21

Ages 11 to 14

Cost: $20

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Create your own fabric art in this class. Pretty fabric will become flowers when appliquéd with the sewing machine in this workshop.

Fun, Fab and Fantastic

Accessories 2

Friday, July 22

Ages 10 to 14

Cost: $17.40

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Beads, beads and more beads. Students will make one of a kind polymer clay beads then combine them with glass beads to create unique bracelets, necklaces and pins.

Get Organized

Tuesday, July 26

Ages 9 to 12

Cost: $20

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Organize your space with these attractive room accessories; wall organizer; bedside caddy; computer wrist rest and more.

Ragtime Quilts*

Wednesday and Thursday, July 27 and 28

Ages 11 to 14

Cost: $30

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This quilt as you go project makes a soft cuddly 50” X 60” quilt in just two days.

Duffle Bags*

Tuesday, Aug. 2

Ages 11 to 14

Cost: $15

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Duffle bags are a great way to carry stuff for overnights or weekend trips. Waterproof fabric makes this a sturdy bag.

Creative Needle Arts

Thursday, Aug. 4

Ages 9 to 14

Cost: $20

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Not all sewing is done by machine. Learn how to make pretty embroidery stitches in this workshop. The class will also explore latch hooking and plastic canvas.

All classes will meet in the Clemson Extension Conference Room, Suite 4300, Greenville County Square, 301 University Ridge.
