It’s almost Halloween. Everyone wants to have a safe and happy Halloween, and common sense can make the holiday more treat than trick, according to a Clemson University faculty member. “Parents should be thinking about safety,” said Deborah Thomason, professor and Clemson Extension family and consumer sciences state program leader. She offers this advice for the witches and goblins before their descent on the neighborhoods. * Carry a flashlight. * Wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing to be more visible. * Plan your route and share it with family members. Have an adult come with you, if possible. * Stay in familiar neighborhoods. * Visit homes that have a porch light on. * Never go into a stranger’s home. Accept treats at the door. * Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover your eyes. * Make sure costumes don’t drag on the ground. * Be cautious of animals and strangers. * Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating and don’t eat candy if the package is already open. “If everyone will use these common sense rules, Halloween will be a much safer and happier event,” said Thomason.
