Muscadine Initiative is set for Pee Dee REC on Nov. 16 FLORENCE – If you have an interest in growing muscadine grapes, the Pee Dee Research and Education Center will be a good place to be on Nov. 16. Clemson University will host the South Carolina Muscadine Field Day and update, providing a look at a one-acre planting of muscadine varieties known as the S. C. Muscadine Project Vineyard. “We’ve had outstanding vine growth in the five and a half months since their planting,” said Jody Martin, project coordinator and Clemson Extension agent in Florence County. “Visitors will get a first hand look at what recommended production practices can do.” The meeting begins at 4 p.m. and runs until 6, when a meal will be provided by the S.C. Tobacco Growers Association, a major sponsor for the muscadine project. Participants will be updated on the developing muscadine industry in the state, according to Martin. “We’ll hear about the muscadine growers’ association that is being organized and goals for some market development,” he said. Persons planning to attend the field day are asked to register by calling (843) 661-4800, ext. 115 or sending an e-mail to muscadines@clemson.edu. A head count will help with meal planning. Tobacco growers will meet after the evening meal at 7 o’clock. Field day participants are invited to sit in.
