NEWS BRIEF FROM CLEMSON UNIVERSITY ’S PSA MEDIA RELATIONS

FALL PLANT SALE - Friday, Sept. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 1

Peak planting time is upon us, Come out and ask the experts – S.C. Botanical Garden staff and volunteers and members of the Foothills Master Gardeners - will be on hand to help with plant selection and garden design ideas. Choose from a terrific selection of perennials, trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, native plants, shade plants and more.
Friends Preview Sale: Friday, Sept, 30: 2 pm - 6:30 pm for Friends of the Garden and Geology Museum. New members may join at the sale for a $25 tax deductible donation. Payroll deduction is available for Clemson University faculty and staff.

Public Sale: Saturday, Oct. 1: 9 am – 1 pm

Location: S.C. Botanical Garden Operations Area at the corner of Hwy. 76 and Perimeter Road.

CD RELEASE PARTY and CONCERT - Thursday, Oct. 6
Celebrate the release of the 2004 Harvest Concert Series compilation CD. The 2004 Feature Band, Tugalo Holler, will perform followed by a Jam Session with members of the rest of the bands who played on the CD. Bring your chair and a picnic, or grab a bite to eat at the Carriage House Cafe. 2004 Harvest Concert Series features this areas best bluegrass and traditional string musicians: EZ Duzit, Drover's Old Time Medicine Show, Grass Roots Revue, Curtis Blackwell and the Dixie Bluegrass Boys, Tugalo Holler and Steve McGaha and Dean Watson. CDs will be available to purchase at the show. Check out the rest of the 2005 Harvest Concert Series line up.

Admission: $5/adults & $2/children 4 and up
Thursday, 6 - 8:30 pm
Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center.

HARVEST CONCERT SERIES - Thursday evenings, Oct. 13, 20 & 27
This is the fourth year of garden concerts featuring local bands with bluegrass, traditional singer/songwriters, comedy & storytellers and blues. Bring a chair and a picnic basket and get ready to enjoy some good music in the beautiful relaxing surroundings of the Discovery Center. The Carriage House Cafe will be open serving delicious food and cold drinks. Be sure to bring your bug spray. Complete schedule and details to be announced shortly. CDs from 2003 and 2004 Harvest Concert Series will be available at the show and in the Garden Gift Shop.

Oct. 13: Singer/Songwriter Night featuring Lucy Allen and Marshall Goers . Lucy Allen tours the western Carolinas and puts her personal stamp on songs that recount life's struggles and illuminate the possibilities of their lessons - whether they are original tunes or well chosen covers that display her formidable guitar and vocal skills. In this rootsy folk performance, Allen with Goers, delivers sometimes stirring, sometimes amusing, moments of truth, recognition and celebration. Admission: $5/adults, $2/kids age 4 and older. Thursdays, 5:30 – 8 pm. Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center Lawn.

Oct. 20: Comedy & Guitar Pickin' with Carla Ulbrich. Ulbrich is a South Carolina native and former school band geek. This fan favorite on the long-running nationally syndicated Dr. Demento show, award-winning songwriter and professional smart aleck Carla Ulbrich has been compared to the likes of Weird Al, Chet Atkins and a bologna sandwich. A better guitar player than most bologna sandwiches, this special performance is sure to get you laughing at life's socially relevant topics as dating for food, the Guinness Book of Records, and a duet with a Klingon. Admission: $5/adults, $2/kids age 4 and older. Thursdays, 5:30 - 8 pm. Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center Lawn.

Oct. 27: BluesFEST in the Garden! ...Bringing Piedmont Blues Back to the Piedmont . Featuring performances by two blues duos. Admission: $7/adults, $2/kids age 4 and older. Thursdays, 5:30 - 8 pm. Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center Lawn.

"Thunder & Lightening" - an exciting performance by "Chocolate Thunder", Linda Rodney, with the lightening fast guitar licks of Steve McGaha, state heritage award winner and one of South Carolina's premier bluesmen.

PLUS
Vanderford & King - Hot Harmonica Blues and Guitar Stylings. Freddie Vanderford plays a red hot bluesharp just like old "Pegleg Sam" himself. He'll be backed by the animated guitar and vocals of Michael King of Jellyroll Antenna.
