FLORA, FAUNA and CULTURE OF THE SOUTHEAST: an exhibit by Nancy Barton and Nancy Perry – Sept. – Dec. Be sure to visit the Discovery Center Gallery this fall to see the beautiful exhibit by these two Upstate artists. Nancy Barton uses photography to capture colorful and enticing images of nature, many of which were taken right here at the Garden. Nancy Perry uses a paintbrush with many different mediums to interpret the beauty of nature and landscapes. Workshops will be offered by both artists during the exhibit. Free. Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center Gallery. Hours: Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm and Sunday 1-5pm FALL PLANT SALE - Saturday, Oct. 1 Peak planting time is upon us. Come out and ask the experts – S.C. Botanical Garden staff and volunteers and members of the Foothills Master Gardeners, will be on hand to help with plant selection and garden design ideas. Choose from a terrific selection of perennials, trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, native plants, shade plants and more. Saturday, Oct. 1: 9 am - 1 pm Location: S.C. GARDEN and CAMPUS DISCOVERY WALKS - Wednesdays, Oct. 5 – Nov. 30 Join Education Director Lisa Wagner for a noon walk in the Garden or on the Clemson University campus. Wagner will explore different garden areas each week, with potential excursions to other campus sites related to the recently published The Nature of Clemson: a Field Guide to the Natural History of Clemson University. She’ll focus on seasonal nature observation in these informal walks. Wear shoes suitable for uneven terrain. NATURAL HISTORY OF CLEMSON UNIVERSITY - Thursdays, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27 Are you interested in exploring interesting areas of the Clemson University campus while learning more about the plants and wildlife that live here? Using the recently published field guide to the natural history of Clemson University, The Nature of Clemson, join one of the authors Lisa Wagner to discover some of the most diverse spots on campus, including the South Carolina Botanical Garden. Fee: $28, includes copy of the Field Guide ($25 for SCBG members & volunteers) Thursdays, 3:30 pm - 5 pm Location: Nature Learning Center . CD RELEASE PARTY and CONCERT - Thursday, Oct. 6 Celebrate the release of the 2004 Harvest Concert Series compilation CD. The 2004 Feature Band, Tugalo Holler, will perform, followed by a Jam Session with members of the rest of the bands who played on the CD. Bring your chair and a picnic or grab a bite to eat at the Carriage House Cafe. 2004 Harvest Concert Series features this areas best bluegrass and traditional string musicians: EZ Duzit, Drover's Old Time Medicine Show, Grass Roots Revue, Curtis Blackwell and the Dixie Bluegrass Boys, Tugalo Holler and Steve McGaha, and Dean Watson. She’ll share her approach and provide handouts and information based on her experience creating interesting photographs in a variety of landscapes. Two sessions of the same class will be offered. HARVEST CONCERT SERIES - Thursday evenings, October 13, 20 and 27 Our fourth year of garden concerts featuring local bands with bluegrass, traditional singer/songwriters, comedy, storytellers and blues. Bring a chair and a picnic basket and get ready to enjoy some good music in the beautiful relaxing surroundings of the Discovery Center. You'll enjoy this duo. Lucy Allen tours the western Carolinas and puts her personal stamp on songs that recount life's struggles and illuminate the possibilities of their lessons - whether they are original tunes or well chosen covers that display her formidable guitar and vocal skills. In this rootsy folk performance, Allen with Goers, delivers sometimes stirring, sometimes amusing, moments of truth, recognition and celebration. Read more about Lucy Allen. You'll love this S.C. native and former school band geek. This fan favorite on the long-running nationally syndicated Dr. Demento Show, award-winning songwriter and professional smart aleck Carla Ulbrich has been compared to the likes of Weird Al, Chet Atkins and a bologna sandwich. A better guitar player than most bologna sandwiches, this special performance is sure to get you laughing at life's socially relevant topics as dating for food, the Guinness Book of Records, and a duet with a Klingon. He'll be backed by the animated guitar and vocals of Michael King. FALL PERENNIAL GARDENING - Friday, Oct. 14 Fall is a good time to evaluate the success of your perennial beds, prepare for winter and plan for spring. Join Lisa Wagner for an overview about useful gardening practices that help keep perennials growing their best as well as how to select perennials that will thrive in their sites. Participants will look at some effective pruning, shaping, and mulching practices, using The Well Tended Perennial Garden (available in the SCBG Gift Shop) as a guide. Tuition: $15 ($12 for SCBG members & volunteers) Friday, 10 am - Noon Location: Nature Learning Center . HUNTER'S MOON NIGHT HIKE - Tuesday, Oct. 18 Full moons in the fall are especially luminous, because of the moon's position relative to the horizon. Join naturalist Lisa Wagner for an evening hike in the garden. Experience the sights, sounds and sensations of a (close to) full moon night. Please wear walking shoes, and clothing appropriate for walking in the woods. Fee: $12 per family (up to 5 family members)($9 for SCBG members & volunteers) Tuesday, 7 - 9 pm Location: Meet at the Discovery Center Parking Area. FROM THE GROUND UP: CREATING A NEW PERENNIAL BED - Friday, Oct. 21 Whether you're starting with an overgrown landscape or bare ground following construction, creating a new landscape involves imagination and creativity, as well as hard work. Join SCBG Horticulturist Sherry Aultman to learn the ins and out of evaluating landscape elements and creating a fresh new design on a limited budget as she updates planting in one of the oldest garden sites in the South Carolina Botanical Garden . She’ll talk about design considerations, soil amendments, and plant selection. Tuition: $25 ($20 for SCBG members & volunteers) Friday, 1 - 4 pm Location: Start at the Nature Learning Center . PAWS IN THE GARDEN - Sunday, Oct. 23 Take a fun 2 mile loop walk for people and their pets. Event will be held rain or shine. Pets need to be on a leash and under control. Children are welcomed when accompanied by an adult. One t-shirt is included with registration. Extra t-shirts are available for $15. Fee: $25/family (up to 5 individuals, includes pets) Sunday, 2 - 3 pm Location: Meet at the Discovery Center Parking Area.
