The Nature of Quilts: Artistic Impressions by Marilyn Wall and Diana Pickens Come in to see the colorful and artistic quilts by Marilyn Wall, West Union and Diana Pickens of Moore . These quilt artists translate color, flow and expression through an array of textures using fabric, beads and appliqué work. This year, is a year in quilts at the Discovery Center Gallery and rotates quarterly with a special traveling exhibit this summer from Alaska . Free. Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center Gallery Hours: Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm and Sunday 1 - 5 pm FOUNDATION YOGA - Wednesdays, February 1, 8, 15, 22 Foundation Yoga class is an excellent class for students who are interested in exploring the fundamentals of yoga poses. The focus of each class will be in developing an understanding of the poses while linking them with breath and awareness. Breathwork and meditaion will also be emphasized. Students looking for pre-natal yoga will find this class to be helpful in managing their pregnancy and at the same time preparing them for labor and delivery. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes. Class size is limited to 12 students per session -- pre-registration is suggested, though drop-ins are welcome. Tuition: $12 drop-in per class or $50 for 5 classes Tuesdays, 6 - 7:15 pm Location: Discovery Center Project Knitting – Wednesday Mornings – February 1, 8, 15, 22 This class is for advanced beginners or those ready for a slightly more challenging project. Get ready to learn some new stitches, techniques, and patterns to create any number of gifts -- socks, cables, purses, and more. Students provide their own needles and yarn - project choices and a materials list will be sent to all registrants. Register early as class size is limited to 10. Session I: DESIGNING YOUR HOME LANDSCAPE with Karl Muzii: February 11 – Saturday Join landscape designer Karl Muzii to learn about how to create a pleasing home landscape that suits your preferences. Muzii will talk about elements of successful residential design, light and soil considerations, and choosing plants with a compatible diversity of colors, textures, and form. Muzii is an accomplished landscape designer based in Salem with considerable residential and commercial experience. He’s a popular instructor for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Clemson University. Time: 9 - 9:45 a.m. Fee: $15 per day or $10 per day for Friends of the Garden members for all three sessions. Location: Hayden Conference Center Session II: GARDENING WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS with Bill Jordan Do you like to share your landscape with others? Consider the ways that our personal landscapes can welcome interaction between children and adults, encourage exploration of the natural world, and foster a lifelong love of gardening and the outdoors. Bill Jordan will share his perspective as a seasoned gardener, recent recipient of a MS in Horticulture, after retiring from a full public career in youth services, and coordinator of the S.C. Botanical Garden Sprouting Wings program. He’ll be teaching gardening experiences in youth development in the Department of Horticulture during the Spring semester. Time: 9:45 - 10:30 a.m. Location: Hayden Conference Center Session III: USING WOODY ORNAMENTALS TO ADD MULTI-SEASON INTEREST with Terri Price Enjoying our home landscape is a year-round activity in the Upstate’s relatively mild climate. Choosing a variety of woody ornamentals to add color and texture will help you create an attractive multi-season garden. Greenville-based Master Gardener Terri Price will share her favorites in this hands-on program. Price is an experienced garden writer, innovative designer, and frequent speaker about gardening. Session I: ADDING SEASONAL INTEREST WITH ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS with Jim Faust Well-chosen annuals added to a perennial bed, container groupings, or a shrub border can tie together landscape elements and provide seasonal focal points. Selecting plants of similar requirements; emphasizing drought tolerance; and focusing on long-flowering varieties can also make annuals easier to maintain. Jim Faust will share his research perspective on the latest annuals and some perennials for the horticultural market, as well as new cultivars of old favorites. Faust is a faculty member in the Department of Horticulture and a keen home gardener. Time: 9 - 9:45a.m. Location: Hayden Conference Center Session II: SHADE GARDENING IN THE PIEDMONT with Rekha Morris Join Master Gardener and garden writer Rekha Morris to learn how to transform a shady area into a garden. Morris’s woodland garden provides comprehensive examples of how careful placement of shade-tolerant herbs and shrubs in the understory of oaks and hickories can create a beautifully diverse garden in the shade. She’ll talk about how to evaluate shade levels, moisture requirements, and determine which plants should go where. Morris’s interest in species begonias has taken her on plant-collecting travels in Asia , Mexico , and South America . Time: 9:45-10:30 am Location: Hayden Conference Center Session III: TREES AND LANDSCAPE PLANTINGS with Ellen Vincent A diversity of trees can transform your home landscape from a typical yard into a beautiful and welcoming space. Good selection and careful planting ensures the longevity and health of landscape trees. Clemson University Environmental Horticulturist Ellen Vincent will share the latest findings on how to best plant a tree in her engaging program. She’ll take the mystery out of how deep and wide the hole should be, what soil amendments to add, and how best to mulch. Vincent’s broad horticultural expertise includes plant selection and care, sound environmental practices, and landscape design. Time: 11 - 11:45 a.m. Location: Hayden Conference Center For The Love of Orchids Show, February 17, 18 & 19 Time: Friday and Saturday 10 am – 4 pm and Sunday 1 – 5 pm Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center NATURAL HISTORY OF CLEMSON UNIVERSITY , February 17, 24, March 3, 10, 17, & 31 Interested in exploring some areas of Clemson University ’s main campus while learning more about the plants and wildlife that live there? Join naturalist Lisa Wagner to discover some of the most diverse and underappreciated spots on campus. We’ll explore the flora, fauna, and landscape history of campus in easy strolls. Some of the sites we will visit are the areas near Fort Hill and Tillman Hall, President’s Park and the Old Pecan Orchard, the Woodland Cemetery , East Beach , and the Calhoun Field Laboratory, Brooks Center Woods and Suber Pond, Lake Hartwell Dikes, and the South Carolina Botanical Garden .
