‘Golfing for a Cure’ set for April 7

ANDERSON – Clemson Extension and the Upstate Minority Health Alliance are co-sponsoring the seventh annual “Golfing for a Cure” tournament on April 7 beginning at noon at Cobbs Glen Golf Course in Anderson.

“Golfing for a Cure,” an educational fundraiser, was established in 1999 as a means to help underserved women and their families get early cancer screening services.

There will be a “Pairings Party” on April 6 at Cobb’s Glen Country Club to kick off the event.

The cost is $200 for a team of four or $60 for an individual player. The cost is $100 for anyone who would like to sponsor a hole.

Tournament funds are used in outreach efforts to educate communities on the prevention of cancer and to support early diagnosis through screening.

The community health initiative is targeted to impact the health of women across the state. It provides monetary support for persons who can’t afford cancer screening services.

“Education is the key to improving survival rates by teaching lifestyle and behavior changes,” said Marian Chapman, Clemson Extension community health specialist and coordinator of the event.

The tournament is supported by numerous local businesses.

“Anderson Radiology has come aboard this year,” said Chapman. “They have committed to a number of free mammograms and discounted services to our clients.”

This coalition has helped more than 150 women receive needed cancer screening and services and has supported education for thousands of women about cancer prevention.
