South Carolina’s mild climate gives us plenty of time to grow both cool- and warm-season vegetables and herbs, and carry over winter-hardy species. We’ll talk about choosing varieties to grow from seed, selecting transplants, and maintaining and improving soil health and fertility in this workshop focused on creating an enjoyable, productive and beautiful kitchen garden. Fee: $15 ($12 for SCBG members & volunteers) Wednesday, Nov. 7, 10:00 am - noon Location: Nature Learning Center FALL HIGHLIGHTS OF ENGLISH GARDENS - November 10 Join Education Director Lisa Wagner for a visual tour of her favorite ideas from English gardens as she reflects on a recent visit. Her attendance at the BGCI International Congress for Botanical Garden Education gave her an opportunity to visit innovative gardens such as the Eden Project as well as traditional English gardens. This program is designed for volunteers and FRIENDS of the Garden and Geology Museum. Fee: Free Friday, November 10, Noon - 1pm Location: Hayden Conference Center SEED COLLECTION AND PROPAGATION - November 16 Seed collection and seed-saving has been practiced for millennia, but is easier for some plants than others. Many of our native perennials, shrubs, and grasses mature seeds over a period of time, don’t always produce viable seed, and have complex dormancy mechanisms. Ornamental species may be of hybrid origin, reflect genetic modification, or have reduced fertility.† Longevity of seeds varies markedly from species to species. We’ll explore the diversity of seeds, germination strategies, and seed storage requirements and talk about best practices for growing plants from seed.
