THE NATURE OF QUILTS EXHIBIT: UpCountry Quilters Guild – October – December Come see the beautiful and artistic quilts by members of the UpCountry Quilters Guild of Pickens County . A great variety of traditional and art quilts on display October through December. $2 suggested donation supports the gallery. by native South Carolinian and special friend of the Garden, Elizabeth
Belser Fuller. The collection ranges from 1947 to 2005 and includes
a collection of paintings from the island of Dominica and quilt “Garden
Escape” by Marilyn Wall and Diana Pickens that was commissioned
by Fuller in 2005. A must-see part of your garden visit. Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center Gallery Hours: Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm and Sunday 1:00 - 5:00 pm FOUNDATION YOGA - Wednesdays, October 4, 11, 18, 25 Foundation Yoga class is an excellent class for students who are interested in exploring the fundamentals of yoga poses. The focus of each class will be in developing an understanding of the poses while linking them with breath and awareness. Breathwork and meditation will also be emphasized. Students looking for pre-natal yoga will find this class to be helpful in managing their pregnancy and at the same time preparing them for labor and delivery. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes. Class size is limited to 12 students per session so, pre-registration is suggested though drop-ins are welcome. Tuition: $12 drop-in per class or $50 for 5 classes Tuesdays, 6:00 - 7:15 pm Location: Discovery Center PLANT SELECTION FOR THE PIEDMONT - October 5 Fall provides ideal growing conditions for plant establishment and growth, with warm soil temperatures and adequate moisture. We’ll talk about selecting plants that will thrive in your landscape, whether it’s sun or shade, and how to choose plants that will suit your needs and gardening style. This program is designed for beginning and intermediate gardeners who’d like to expand their gardening skills. Tuition: $12 includes a behind-the-scenes SCBG plant sale preview ($10 for SCBG members & volunteers) Thursday, October 5, 10 a.m. - Noon Location: Nature Learning Center FLOW YOGA – Thursdays, October 5, 12, 19, 26 Flow Yoga class focuses on ashtanga vinyasa style yoga and provides a well-rounded workout to yoga students. This style of yoga challenges students of all levels and abilities through a sequence of postures that build strength and flexibility. The breathwork and meditation practiced in class reduces stress, induces relaxation, and brings clarity of mind. Renee is a practitioner of ashtanga vinyasa yoga and encourages all students to strive for a sense of wholeness and appreciation for where and who they are. Tuition: $10 per class Thursdays: 6:00 - 7:15 pm Location: SCBG Hayden Conference Center FIRST FRIDAY NATURE WALK – October 6 Fee: Free Time: 7 a.m. Location: Meets at the Red Caboose Parking Area HARVEST MOON NIGHT HIKE - October 6 The full moon that occurs closest to the fall equinox is called the Harvest Moon, and is often particularly luminous, because of the moon's position relative to the horizon. Join naturalist Lisa Wagner for an evening hike in the garden. Experience the sights, sounds and sensations of a full moon night. Please wear walking shoes, and clothing appropriate for walking in the woods. Flashlights are not needed. Fee: $7 per family (up to 5) ($5 for SCBG members & volunteers) Friday, October 6, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Location: Meet at the Discovery Center Parking Lot FALL PLANT SALE 2006 - Friday and Saturday: October 6 & 7 Fall is peak planting time in Zone 7 and the SCBG has what you need to add to your existing garden or design a completely new landscape. Master Gardeners of the Foothills, SCBG Staff and Students will assist you with plant selection. This is our biggest fall sale yet. Choose from shade-loving plants, perennials, shrubs, trees, grasses and more. Plant lists available at the sale or at the Discovery Center two days prior to the sale for review. Oct. 6 - Friday: FRIENDS PREVIEW PLANT SALE . Friends of the Garden and Campbell Geology Museum get first pick of the crop. New members may join at the sale for $35 tax-deductible donation for individuals and $50 for families. All visitors to the sale must be Friends of the Garden today. Oct. 7 - Saturday: PUBLIC SALE. Everyone is welcome to shop until they drop for the best fall selection in the area. Hours: Friday - 2:30 - 6:00 pm ; Saturday 9 am - 1 pm The Garden Gift Shop is set up with SCBG T-shirts, hand tools, gardening books and more. Come out and support your state botanical garden. PRACTICAL BOTANY FOR GARDENERS - October 11, 18, 25 & November 1 Learn more about the fascinating world of plants in this four-session class designed for gardeners and naturalists. How do flowers produce fruits? How are plants identified? How do I tell when seeds are mature? Why does pinching and deadheading prolong flowering? Why do some plants wilt sooner than others? Explore the intricacies of plants with Education Director Lisa Wagner. Class will include supplementary field trips to local botanical areas, in addition to excursions in the Garden. Fee: $65 ($45 for SCBG members & volunteers) Wednesdays, Oct. 11, 18, 25 & Nov. 1, 9 am - Noon Location: Nature Learning Center EARTH SCIENCE DAY - October 14 Family oriented activities will include fossil preparation and lapidary demonstrations, crafts, games, prizes, and more. Bring in your favorite rock or fossil for identification. Saturday, October 14: 1pm - 4pm Admission: Free Location: Campbell Geology Museum MINDFUL MEDITATION - Saturday mornings, October 14 & 28 Mindful Meditation (also called Insight Meditation) is an ancient practice with modern benefits. Moment-to-moment mindfulness helps us notice the ever-changing flow of experience and thus develop an equanimity that can sustain us in difficult times. This class will practice sitting and walking meditation amid the peaceful setting of the SC Botanical Garden. We'll also learn how to use mindfulness in all our daily activities, making this a technique we can truly "take home" with us. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. A meditation cushion or folding chair is helpful but not necessary. Bench seating is available. Oconee native Jeanne Malmgren has practiced and written about various healing arts for more than 25 years. She taught yoga and meditation for city recreation departments, in schools and fitness centers, and for corporate wellness programs. Jeanne is co-founder of a meditation/yoga center in Florida , as well as co-author of Journey to Mindfulness (Wisdom Publications, 2003). She has undertaken intensive silent meditation retreats in the United States and Asia for periods as long as 21 days.
