Come see the colorful and artistic quilts by Anna Willis and Sheila Gaines of Clemson. These quilt artists translate impressions of Africa through folk designs, animals and people with a colorful array of fabrics and design. The Alaska Fiber Festival is a year in quilts at the Discovery Center Gallery and rotates quarterly with a special traveling exhibit this summer from Alaska . $2 suggested donation supports the gallery. Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center Gallery Hours: Monday - Saturday 10 am – 4 pm and Sunday 1 - 5 pm THE WORK OF ELIZABETH BELSER FULLER – Ongoing A permanent exhibit of watercolors, acrylics and mixed media works by native South Carolinian and special friend of the garden, Elizabeth Belser Fuller. The collection ranges from 1947 to 2005 and includes a collection of paintings from the island of Dominica and quilt “Garden Escape” by Marilyn Wall and Diana Pickens that was commissioned by Fuller in 2005. A must-see part of your garden visit. Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center Gallery Hours: Monday - Saturday 10 am – 4 pm and Sunday 1 - 5 pm FIRST FRIDAY NATURE WALK – September 1 Fee: Free Time: 7 a.m. Location: Meet at the Red Caboose parking area FOUNDATION YOGA - Wednesdays, September 6, 13, 20, 27 Foundation Yoga class is an excellent class for students who are interested in exploring the fundamentals of yoga poses. The focus of each class will be in developing an understanding of the poses while linking them with breath and awareness. Breathwork and meditaTion will also be emphasized. Students looking for pre-natal yoga will find this class to be helpful in managing their pregnancy and at the same time preparing them for labor and delivery. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes. Class size is limited to 12 students per session so, pre-registration is suggested though drop-ins are welcome. Tuition: $12 drop-in per class or $50 for 5 classes Tuesdays, 6 - 7:15 pm Location: Discovery Center FLOW YOGA – Thursdays, September 7, 14, 21, 28 Flow Yoga class focuses on ashtanga vinyasa style yoga and provides a well-rounded workout to yoga students. This style of yoga challenges students of all levels and abilities through a sequence of postures that build strength and flexibility. The breathwork and meditation practiced in class reduces stress, induces relaxation, and brings clarity of mind. Renee is a practitioner of ashtanga vinyasa yoga and encourages all students to strive for a sense of wholeness and appreciation for where and who they are. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes. Class size is limited to 12 students per session so, pre-registration is suggested though drop-ins are welcome. Tuition: $10 per class Thursdays: 6 - 7:15 pm Location: S.C. Botanical Garden Hayden Conference Center STONE WORKSHOP WITH GARY BURGESS – Saturday, September 9 Learn how to build stone structures to enhance your garden landscape. Master stonemason Gary Burgess and his crew will teach you the fundamentals of building these attractive long-lasting structures. The day-long workshop includes class room instruction and actual hands-on work on the newly built retaining wall at the Nature Learning Center . Wear clothes to get dirty. You'll need these tools: brick hammer, brick mason trowel, 3/8" tuck pointer trowel, 6 inch or 8 inch small level, safety glasses, gloves and knee pads (optional). Saturday, September 9 – 9 am - 4:30 pm Location: Hanson Nature Learning Center MINDFUL MEDITATION - Saturday mornings, September 9 & 16 Mindful Meditation (also called Insight Meditation) is an ancient practice with modern benefits. Moment-to-moment mindfulness helps us notice the ever-changing flow of experience and thus develop an equanimity that can sustain us in difficult times. This class will practice sitting and walking meditation amid the peaceful setting of the S.C. Botanical Garden . We'll also learn how to used mindfulness in all our daily activities, making this a technique we can truly "take home" with us. Please wear comfortable, loose clothing. A meditation cushion or folding chair is helpful but not necessary. Bench seating is available. Oconee native Jeanne Malmgren has practiced and written about various healing arts for more than 25 years. She taught yoga and meditation for city recreation departments, in schools and fitness centers, and for corporate wellness programs. Jeanne is co-founder of a meditation/yoga center in Florida , as well as co-author of Journey to Mindfulness (Wisdom Publications, 2003). She has undertaken intensive silent meditation retreats in the United States and Asia for periods as long as 21 days. Saturday mornings, September 9 & 16 - 9 - 10 am Tuition: $10 per session Location: Hortitherapy Garden (near the Hayden Conference Center ) FALL FOSSIL ADVENTURE! - Saturday, September 23 Campbell Geology Museum curators will lead participants to localities in Lowcountry , S.C. or Georgia to collect prehistoric fossils. Registration deadline is September 13. Saturday, September 23 – 8 am – 8 pm Tuition: $50 per person Location: Meet at the Geology Museum parking lot. PETER RABBIT’S FALL SALAD GARDEN - Saturday, September 30 Specialty lettuces, greens, edible flowers, and herbs are perfect choices for a family-friendly fall salad garden. Growing greens with a diversity of tastes and textures make eating salads fun. Participants will learn the basics of growing fall salad greens and create a container garden to take home. This program is designed for an adult and child pair, but individuals are also welcome. Program will conclude prior to home football game traffic buildup.
