David Gunter, a native of Pelion, made the switch in April, according to Bruce Martin, interim director at the Pee Dee REC. As an Extension associate, Gunter will have responsibility for integrated pest management and agronomic programs for crops such as peanuts, soybeans, corn and tobacco. “David joins the row crop agriculture Extension team, and will work in cooperation with specialists at the Pee Dee REC and the Edisto REC at Blackville, as well as work with county agents on agronomic crop problems in the Pee Dee region,” Martin said. Gunter earned two degrees from Clemson University, a B.S. in agricultural mechanization and business in 1991 and a Master’s of Agriculture in 1994. He became a county agent in Darlington in 1995. While there he looked at poultry litter to fertilize cotton, supervised the county soybean variety tests, and helped revive the state soybean yield contest. He and his wife Toni live in Florence with their three children – Lindsey, 6, Henry, 5, and Ellie, 22 months. Gunter is a Certified Crop Adviser, a member of the S.C. Association of County Agricultural Agents, the S.C. Corn and Soybean Association Board of Directors, the S.C. Fertilizer Advisory Committee and the S.C. Seedsmen Association. END
