Images of the South Exhibit – Jeffrey Callaham

This must-see exhibit has scenes filled with color, story lines and vivid characters from a bygone era, capture the dynamics of his rural South Carolina heritage and continue to captivate an ever-expanding audience. Artist Jeffrey Callaham of McCormick focuses his southern cultural heritage by reflecting stories, family traditions and scenes from his youth. Callaham is a full-time artist in residence at the McCormick Arts Council Keturah (MACK). $2 suggested donation supports the gallery. April – June.

THE WORK OF ELIZABETH BELSER FULLER – Ongoing

A permanent exhibit of watercolors, acrylics and mixed media works by native South Carolinian and special friend of the Garden, Elizabeth Belser Fuller. The collection ranges from 1947 to 2005 and includes a collection of paintings from the island of Dominica and quilt “Garden Escape” by Marilyn Wall and Diana Pickens that was commissioned by Fuller in 2005. A must-see part of your garden visit!

FOUNDATION YOGA - Wednesdays, April 4, 11, 18, 25

Foundation Yoga class is an excellent class for students who are interested in exploring the fundamentals of yoga poses. The focus of each class will be in developing an understanding of the poses while linking them with breath and awareness. Breathwork and meditation will also be emphasized. Students looking for pre-natal yoga will find this class to be helpful in managing their pregnancy and at the same time preparing them for labor and delivery. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes. Class size is limited to 12 students per session so, pre-registration is suggested though drop-ins are welcome.

Tuition: $12 drop-in per class or $50 for five classes

FLOW YOGA – Thursdays, April 5, 12, 19, 26

Flow Yoga class focuses on ashtanga vinyasa style yoga and provides a well-rounded workout to yoga students. This style of yoga challenges students of all levels and abilities through a sequence of postures that build strength and flexibility. The breathwork and meditation practiced in class reduces stress, induces relaxation, and brings clarity of mind. Renee is a practitioner of ashtanga vinyasa yoga and encourages all students to strive for a sense of wholeness and appreciation for where and who they are. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes. Class size is limited to 12 students per session so, pre-registration is suggested though drop-ins are welcome.

Highlights of English Gardens – April 5

(OLLI Lunch & Learn program) Spend a lunch hour enjoying a visual tour through some spectacular gardens in Southern England , including Sissinghurst Castle Garden , Great Dixter, Royal Botanical Garden-Kew, RHS Wakehurst, Hidcote, and the Eden Project, as well as others. Lisa Wagner, S.C. Botanical Garden director of education, had an opportunity to have a first-time look at these gardens last Fall on a do-it-yourself self-guided garden study tour.

Register through the OLLI program (www.clemson.edu/OLLI).

Free for Friends and S.C. Botanical Garden/BCGM volunteers -- Registration not required.

Time: Noon – 1 pm

First Friday Nature Walk – April 6

Meet at the Red Caboose for an informative walk with naturalist and Clemson University Professor David Bradshaw. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate dress. Walks generally last between one and two hours. *Note times for April – October, 7am.

Fee: Free

Time: 7 a.m.

Location: Meet at the Red Caboose Parking Area

Spring Fossil Adventure – April 14
Geology Museum Curator Dave Cicimurri will lead this expedition 40 million years back in time to collect marine fossils. Transportation and lunch are provided. Children age 10 and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required by April 6.

Fee: $50, includes lunch and transportation
Time: 8am - 8pm

Location: Meet in the Discovery Center parking lot.

Fossil Plants of the S.C. Botanical Garden – April 19

Get in touch with the natural world as you discover the ancient history of plants. Museum Educator Christian Cicimurri will lead this hour long walk off the garden’s paved trails. Wear comfortable shoe and appropriate clothing. This event will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

Fee; Free

Time: 11am

Location: Meet in the Discovery Center parking lot.

Spring Plant Sale – April 20 & 21

Time to freshen up your existing landscape or start a new garden with plants from the S.C. Botanical Garden. You’ll find a terrific variety of ornamental grasses, perennials, trees, shrubs, shade-loving plants and natives. Master Gardeners of the Foothills along with garden staff and volunteers will help with gardening questions and landscape ideas. Proceeds benefit the S.C. Botanical Garden.

Friday, April 19 – FRIENDS Preview Plant Sale – 2:30 – 6 p.m. Open to Friends of the Garden. New members may join at the sale for $35 tax-deductible donation.

Saturday, April 20 – PUBLIC Plant Sale – 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Open to the public, free admission.

Strut Your Mutt – April 21
Strut your Mutt, presented by the Clemson University Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management Department is a fun and family centered event created for everyone and their dogs in and around the Clemson community. Activities will include a 1.5 mile dog walk, plus other contests and games such as best dressed dog, where prizes will be awarded. The Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management Department is pleased to donate all proceeds to local animal shelters. In addition to registration fee, participants are encouraged to collect sponsorships for additional gifts. Create a Natural Wind Chime – April 28

Join Master Gardener Karen Terry to construct a natural wind chime made of locally harvested bamboo in this family program. Participants will learn about bamboo’s uses around the world, harvest bamboo, and create a wind chime to take home.

Fee: $12 per family/$10 for S.C. Botanical Garden members and volunteers

Time: 9:30 – 11 am

Location: Nature Learning Center

Be a Garden Volunteer

No matter what your background or the time you have available, there is a place for you at the SC Botanical Garden. Volunteer opportunities are available in grounds maintenance and gardening, education programs, special events, and visitor services. Garden Gift Shops
The Garden Gift Shop and the Campbell Geology Museum Gift Shop offer unique gifts for children and adults. Beautiful handcrafted gift items by local artists, gardening and geology books, t-shirts, logo items, jewelry and more. The Garden Gift Shop now carries live plants, is located at the Fran Hanson Discovery Center and is open Mon.-Sat. 10am – 4pm. The Campbell Geology Museum is open Wed. – Sat. 10am – 5pm and Sunday 1–5pm . Call 864-656-3405 for more information.

GARDEN HOURS OF OPERATION:

SC Botanical Garden is open from dawn until dusk 365 days a year. Discovery Center Garden Gift Shop Hours: Mon.–Sat., 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Geology Museum Hours: Wed. – Sat., 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sun. 1-5 p.m. Admission: $3/adults and $2/children 12 and under. Annual passes available.

The Garden is located on the Clemson University campus at the intersection of Highway 76 and Perimeter Road. It encompasses 295 acres of gardens, streams and woodlands, and is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, free of charge.
