Nature of Quilts Exhibit – Dixie Haywood & Dottie Moore – through September 30 This must-see exhibit of quilts from two talented South Carolina quilters. Dixie Haywood, “Who’s Who in American Quilting” has authored several books, is a certified teacher and judge. Her traditional quilts are the most colorful and intricate, which are sure to wow you. Dottie Moore’s style is toward the abstract and art quilt design. The depth of field, color and flow of these quilts draw you in to each one like a painting. $2 suggested donation supports the gallery. July 2 through September 30. Hours: Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm Location: Fran Hanson Discovery Center Gallery THE WORK OF ELIZABETH BELSER FULLER – Ongoing A permanent exhibit of watercolors, acrylics and mixed media works by native South Carolinian and special friend of the Garden, Elizabeth Belser Fuller. The collection ranges from 1947 to 2005 and includes a collection of paintings from the island of Dominica and quilt “Garden Escape” by Marilyn Wall and Diana Pickens that was commissioned by Fuller in 2005. A must-see part of your garden visit! $2 suggested donation supports the gallery. Hours: Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm First Friday Nature Walk Meet at the Red Caboose for an informative walk with naturalist and Clemson University Professor David Bradshaw. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate dress. Walks generally last between one and two hours. Time: 7 a.m. April-Oct.; 9am Nov.-March Fee: Free Location: Meet at the Red Caboose Parking Area Therapeutic Vinyasa Yoga - Tuesdays Hours: 5:45-6:45pm Location: Hayden Conference Center FOUNDATION YOGA – Thursdays Fee: $12 drop-in per class, $50 for 5 classes(CU student rate $8/class or 6 for $35) Thursdays, 5:45 - 6:45 pm Location: SCBG Hayden Conference Center FLOW YOGA – Thursdays Flow Yoga class focuses on ashtanga vinyasa style yoga and provides a well-rounded workout to yoga students. This style of yoga challenges students of all levels and abilities through a sequence of postures that build strength and flexibility. The breathwork and meditation practiced in class reduces stress, induces relaxation, and brings clarity of mind. Renee is a practitioner of ashtanga vinyasa yoga and encourages all students to strive for a sense of wholeness and appreciation for where and who they are. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes. Class size is limited to 12 students per session so, pre-registration is suggested though drop-ins are welcome. Fee: $12 drop-in per class, $50 for 5 classes (CU student rate $8/class or 6 for $35) Hours: 7:00-8:15pm Location: SCBG Hayden Conference Center CHEROKEE GARDEN WALK - September 12 Learn more about the culture of South Carolina's earliest inhabitants during this tour of the Cherokee Garden. Please dress appropriately for an hour long walk that may lead off conventional trails. This event is appropriate for small children, however strollers and other wheeled devices are not recommended. Carolina – Sept. 13, 20 & 27 BASICS OF GARDENING IN THE UPSTATE - September 20 Whether you’re new to the Upstate, or new to gardening, this illustrated presentation is designed to get you started with an overview of our Zone 7 climate, site considerations, soil evaluation and amendments, plant selection, and suggestions for how to create an attractive landscape that won’t tie you to your garden. Education Director Lisa Wagner is a plant ecologist and avid gardener who will share her experiences gardening and learning from other gardeners in the Upstate for the last 14 years. Hours: 10 – 11:30 am Fee: $7 ($5 to Friends of the Garden, Museum, and volunteers) Location: Hayden Conference Center HARVEST MOON NIGHT HIKE – September 26 The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the fall equinox. It’s often one of the most luminous of the year, because the moon is low on the horizon. We’ll take an evening walk in the garden, as dusk fades to night, and experience the sounds, scents, and sensations of a fall night. Please wear walking shoes, and clothing appropriate for walking on woodland trails. Flashlights are not needed. Hours: 7 – 9 pm Fee: $7 per family (up to 5) ($5 for SCBG members & volunteers) Location: Meet at the Discovery Center parking area PLANT SELECTION FOR THE UPSTATE - September 27 Fall provides ideal growing conditions for plant establishment and growth, with warm soil temperatures and adequate moisture. We’ll talk about selecting plants that will thrive in your landscape, whether it’s sun or shade, and how to choose plants that will suit your needs and gardening style. This program is designed for beginning and intermediate gardeners who’d like to expand their gardening skills. Hours: 10 am – Noon Location: Nature Learning Center Fall Plant Sale – September 28 and 29 Fall is peak planting time in Zone 7 and the S.C. Botanical Garden has what you need to add to your existing garden or design a completely new landscape. Master Gardeners of the Foothills, S.C. Botanical Garden staff and students will assist you with plant selection. This is our biggest fall sale yet. Choose from shade-loving plants, perennials, shrubs, trees, grasses and more. Plant lists available at the sale or at the Discovery Center two days prior to the sale for review. Friday: FRIENDS PREVIEW PLANT SALE. Friends of the Garden and Campbell Geology Museum get first pick of the crop. New members may join at the sale for $35 tax-deductible donation for individuals & $50 for families. All visitors to the sale must be Friends of the Garden today. Saturday: PUBLIC SALE. Everyone is welcome to shop ‘til they drop for the best fall selection in the area. Hours: Friday - 2:30 – 6 pm ; Saturday 9 am - 1 pm The Garden Gift Shop is set up with S.C. Botanical Garden t-shirts, hand tools, gardening books and more. Come out and support your state botanical garden. Be a Garden Volunteer No matter what your background or the time you have available, there is a place for you at the SC Botanical Garden. Volunteer opportunities are available in grounds maintenance and gardening, education programs, special events, and visitor services. Annual passes available. The Garden is located on the Clemson University campus at the intersection of Highway 76 and Perimeter Road. It encompasses 295 acres of gardens, streams and woodlands, and is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, free of charge.
