Botanical Garden features two Upstate quilters

CLEMSON – The Nature of Quilts exhibit featuring Dixie Haywood of Pendleton and Dottie Moore of Rock Hill is now on display at the S.C. Botanical Garden’s Discovery Center gallery. The exhibit will run from July through September. There is a $2 suggested donation.

Haywood, “Who’s Who of American Quilters,” is a master hand quilter who concentrates on traditional designs. She has authored several books including “Foundation Quilting,” which is for sale in the Garden Gift Shop.

Moore, fiber artist and quilter, blends elements of nature with symbolism for creative contemporary results.

The two will conduct a day-long workshop on July 21. The session begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at noon with Moore’s “Gardening the Imagination: Creative Quilts Inspired by Nature.” It will include a walk through the garden and techniques on incorporating nature elements into quilt designs.

The afternoon session will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Haywood will teach “Crazy Quilting with a Difference.” Participants should bring five or six coordinated fabrics, including prints and solids in varying values or in one color in differing scale and values and a sewing machine and basic sewing supplies.

Cost is $90 for both workshops, which includes lunch and refreshments. Space is limited to 20 participants.

The South Carolina Botanical Garden is located on the Clemson University campus at the intersection of Highway 76 and Perimeter Road. It encompasses 295 acres of gardens, streams and woodlands, and is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, free of charge.
