A six-week program called the “2007 Exploring Richland Class” kicks off April 30 at the Sandhills Research and Education Center Lakehouse, according to Monica Miller, regional development agent with the Clemson Institute for Economic and Community Development. Exploring Richland is designed to arm potential community leaders with the knowledge to make informed decisions. Students will learn how to serve on boards and commissions, how to run for political office, or just how to take a stand on public issues. Miller said that participants will travel the four corners of Richland County and learn about topics such as public health and safety, history, land use planning, government, education, agriculture, the environment, economic development and recreation. The initial class will include a breakfast. Future classes will be: May 2 – Public Safety. May 9 – History, Agriculture and Land Use. May 16 – Public Health. May 23 – Quality of Life.
