Research House

The Research House at Clemson University is a 2-story house that has been converted into a research laboratory. The house is located on Lake Hartwell about a 10 minute drive from the university campus. The Lab is fully furnished with beds, couches, tables, chairs, TV, etc (please see pictures below). Upstairs are 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths. There are “community areas” downstairs including a large living room/dining room combination, a fully-equipped kitchen with a dinette, a wash room equipped with a washer and dryer, and a half bath. The research areas downstairs include a den area that has been converted into a group work room and a master suite that has been converted into the experimenter control room. The group work room currently has 4 computer testing stations. In addition, there are 2 separate computer testing stations in the master suite for individually testing participants. The experimenter control room has a computer work station, a printer, and storage space. The entire house has been outfitted with wireless cameras to allow for easy monitoring of participants. The monitor and control system for these cameras are also located in the experimenter control room.

We are currently using the lab to conduct a variety of studies on the effects of stress and fatigue on performance and physiological measures of stress. Many studies are sustained operations of between 4 and 30 hours in duration; where participants are requested to complete a series of tasks during the sustained operations period. The lab will also be used for longer-term studies where participants sleep in the upstairs bedrooms and are tested over a series of days.
