Abstract:
Thousands of ladder accidents occur annually and many of them cause debilitating lost-time injuries or death. Many users do not understand the proper use of ladders and the danger involved of using a ladder improperly. Multiple ladder setup procedures were analyzed to determine preferred setup placement angles. An engineering analysis was also performed to determine how many slide-out failures would have occurred based on experimental results. The analysis evaluated current industry standards and also revealed cause for concern based on the number of failures that could have occurred due to the users overall lack of understanding and proper training. Recommendations for a new ladder setup procedure were developed.
