The John W. Kelly Meadow welcomes visitors to the South Carolina Botanical Garden with its open spaces and prolific wildflowers. Located to your left as you drive into the Garden, the meadow encompasses the entire area to your left as you drive toward the Fran Hanson Discovery Center.
The plaque at the brick wall in front of the Fran Hanson Discovery Center summarizes why the Meadow was named for Dr. Kelly, current director of the South Carolina Botanical Garden:
"In honor of Dr. John W. Kelly as director of the South Carolina Botanical Garden for his gift of vision and dedication to botanical, environmental and cultural conservation, talent for leadership and unwavering commitment to serve humanity through the development of a viable public resource for present and future generations." - September 30, 2000
The Lark Wildflower Meadow and the former Butterfly Garden are also located within the Kelly Meadow.
