Early 1993: CCIT employee Barry Johnson created the first Clemson University Web site. It ran off a workstation at his desk in the basement of Poole, running a variant of UNIX called DG/UX. The hompage was mostly a listing of sites within Clemson University.
1994: A Web task force was created, comprised of faculty, staff and students, which met for several months before passing the responsibility of the site’s look and feel to Advancement and the site’s equipment and infrastructure to CCIT. Over the next year, the site was tweaked for design and organization.
1996: CCIT’s January 1996 Computing newsletter featured an article explaining why the Web was such an important tool for Clemson University.
June 1997: The first major site redesign in 1997 was dubbed “Clemson’s roar heard around the world!” Publications and Promotion, housed under Advancement, led the effort. This also marked the beginning of tracking visitor statistics.
April 1998: Clemson’s site received its one millionth hit!
