Animal Procurement
and Maintenance
Laboratory animals are procured from pre-approved sources of
specific pathogen free animals [Animal Order Form].
Other sources of animals may be used if required for a specific project.
Trained and experienced animal care staff provide seven day a week animal
care and husbandry. Animals are maintained in accordance with animal welfare
regulations and federal guidelines.
Animal Care and Health Surveillance
Licensed veterinary technicians and laboratory animal care technicians
with training and experience in the husbandry and behavior of laboratory
animal species provide at least daily animal care and health surveillance
under the direction of a laboratory animal veterinarian.
Technical Services
Technical support services include; blood collection, veterinary care,
euthanasia, and sample collection. Research Services staff will also provide
training to research staff and students on species specific handling and
technical procedures.
Surgical Services
Research Services maintains a fully equipped aseptic surgical facility
and provides certified veterinary technicians trained in anesthesia, surgical
assistance and post operative care of laboratory animal species. Veterinary
staff are available for consultation and provision of surgical services.
Service Request Procedures
Investigators may complete a Service Request Form
for any of the above services. Service Requests should be submitted at
least 24 hours in advance to allow for scheduling technician time and
facility use. Requests for surgical services and other services that require
more than one hour of technician time may require more advance notice.
Animal Care Rates
Research investigators are encouraged to obtain project cost analysis
from Research Services prior to submitting proposals for funding. This
will ensure that all costs associated with an animal research project
