Policies and Procedures

Animal Ordering Procedures
All live vertebrate animals intended for biomedical research or teaching purposes must be ordered through the Office of Research Services. An approved animal use protocol (AUP) is required prior to ordering of animals. Investigators are required to complete and submit an Animal Order Form to request animals. Laboratory rodents are usually shipped for delivery every Monday. Certain species may require several weeks or months notice, therefore consultations with Research Services should begin as early as possible.

Service Request Procedures
Investigators are required to complete and submit a Service Request Form for technical services. Service Requests should be submitted at least 24 hours in advance to allow for scheduling technician time and facility use. Requests for surgical services and other services that require more than one hour of technician time should be scheduled at least 7 days in advance when possible.

Animal Facility Access
Godley-Snell Research Center is a secure facility with restricted access. Only research investigators, staff and graduate students approved on active animal research projects are allowed access and may be assigned a facility access card and a key to their own animal room. Research Services personnel must escort visitors to the Godley-Snell Research Center. All personnel must sign in at the front office when entering the facility.

Visitors and Tour Groups
The Office of Research Services encourages interested individuals and groups to tour the animal research facilities. The Godley-Snell Research Center is an excellent facility for class tours, science clubs, 4H, and other groups interested in biomedical research. Tours can be tailored for different age groups and the interests of the group. Please contact our office to schedule a guided tour.
