What is the Office of Technology Transfer?

The Office of Technology Transfer has University-wide responsibility to implement the objectives of the Patent Policy and the Computer Software Copyright Policy. In doing so, the Office coordinates all patent and copyright activities, including the review, marketing, and licensing of patents and computer software copyrights.

Recent successes include licenses for an animal waste treatment procedure, microdosimetry radiation analysis, controlled eutrophication process, a partitioned aquaculture system, a dynamic voltage restorer, and a method to detect and manage disturbances in electrical distribution systems, among others. Clemson University has consistently ranked among the top U.S. public universities in royalty income from the transfer of intellectual property.  Clemson has generated income in excess of $43 million dollars over the last 10 years.

The Office works in conjunction with the Clemson University Research Foundation (CURF) to commercialize university intellectual property through licensing agreements and new venture formation. CURF is a 501(c)(3) corporation founded in 1986 to support research and business incubation at Clemson University. The Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable, educational or scientific purposes to promote the research enterprise at Clemson University. Their mission is to commercialize the intellectual property of Clemson University through technology transfer; licensing agreements and new venture formations; and assist in developing a strong research infrastructure through development and management of research properties, development of technology maturation and early stage research grants, and participation in sponsored research activities.
