Title:

A Proposed Electrochemical Biosensor Inside A Carbon Microchannel Array Electrode

Case # 285
Inventors: Stephen Creager
Summary: This invention is comprised of a method for fabricating electrochemical biosensors by immobilizing biological recognition elements such as oligonucleotides, antibodies, or similar agents on the inside surface of hollow microchannel (tube) electrodes fabricated from glassy carbon. A wide variety of previously demonstrated electrochemical detection strategies for biosensing that utilize labels such as redox molecules, proteins that catalyze redox reactions, and/or proteins that catalyze reactions that generate redox molecules will be advantageously performed in microchannel electrodes due to the restricted diffusion geometry of the electrode. Highly sensitive coulometric assays should be enabled due to the capability for accumulating redox-active molecules inside the microchannel electrodes. Extension of the invention to include microchannel arrays in configurations suitable for sequential fluid flow processing should be straightforward.
Applications: Sensors for detection of microbiological targets in clinical, defense, agricultural, food and beverage, and homeland security applications. Use in any application where a cheap, field-portable biosensor would be useful.
