Policies and Procedures

Animal Ordering Procedures

All live vertebrate animals intended for biomedical research or teaching purposes must be ordered through the Office of Animal Resources. You must have an approved Animal Use Protocol before you can submit an Animal Order Form. Laboratory rodent orders must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the week of delivery. Orders for certain species or strains might require several weeks’ or months’ notice. Consultations with Animal Resources should begin as early as possible. Several of our commonly used vendors may be contacted for product information, health reports and pricing information.

Service Request Procedures

Investigators are required to complete and submit a Service Request Form for technical services, training and facility usage. Service requests should be submitted at least 24 hours in advance to allow for scheduling technician time and facility use. Requests for surgical services and other services that require more than one hour of technician time should be scheduled at least seven days in advance when possible.

Animal Facility Access

Godley-Snell Research Center is a secure facility with restricted access. Only research investigators, staff and graduate students approved on active animal research projects are granted  access using University issued ID (Tiger Stripe) cards. All personnel must sign in at the front office when entering. Animal Resources personnel must escort visitors.

Visitors and Tour Groups

The Office of Animal Resources encourages interested individuals and groups to tour the animal research facilities. The Godley-Snell Research Center is an excellent facility for class tours, science clubs, 4H and other groups interested in animal research. Tours can be tailored for different age groups and the group’s interests.
