Recent Field Work and Updates

Winter

The 2009-2010 winter field season ran from November to March. During the fall/winter field season, migrant geese were captured using rocket nets (pictured below). Trapping occurred from mid-November to mid-January. Tracking of radio-marked birds took place from December to March. The migrant goose flocks left Santee on March 7 and March 8, 2010.

Summer

In the summer, resident geese are captured and fitted with neck collars. There is a two-week period each summer when geese molt and are flightless, and are therefore easy to catch. So far, about 650 resident geese have been captured and collared for this project.
