SEPTEMBER
CHEROKEE GARDEN WALK - September 12
Learn more about the culture of South Carolina's earliest inhabitants during this tour of the Cherokee Garden. Please dress appropriately for an hour long walk, that may head off conventional trails. This event is appropriate for small children, however strollers and other wheeled devices are not recommended. Inclement weather will cancel this event.

Location: Meet in the Discovery Center parking lotSouthern Fossil Fanatics - Paleontology in South Carolina – Sept. 13, 20 & 27
(For children in 5th – 8th grade)
Explore the prehistoric history of South Carolina, including recent discoveries. Participants will “dig” into fossils, dinosaurs, and geologic time as they learn about ancient land and marine animals from our state. They will identify, and organize fossils into a collection of their own; cast & paint a replica fossil of their choice; and make a fossil necklace. Junior Paleontologists will work with museum curators to plan an exhibit in the Bob Campbell Geology Museum.
Hours: Sept. 13, 20, & 27 from 3:30-5:00pm

Whether you’re new to the Upstate, or new to gardening, this illustrated presentation is designed to get you started with an overview of our Zone 7 climate, site considerations, soil evaluation (and amendments), plant selection, and suggestions for how to create an attractive landscape that won’t tie you to your garden. Education Director Lisa Wagner is a plant ecologist and avid gardener who will share her experiences gardening and learning from other gardeners in the Upstate for the last 14 years.Hours: 10:00 - 11:30 am

Location: Hayden Conference CenterHARVEST MOON NIGHT HIKE - September 26
The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the fall equinox. It’s often one of the most luminous of the year, because the moon is low on the horizon. We’ll take a evening walk in the garden, as dusk fades to night, and experience the sounds, scents, and sensations of a fall night. Please wear walking shoes, and clothing appropriate for walking on woodland trails. Flashlights are not needed.
Hours: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Fee: $7 per family (up to 5) ($5 for SCBG members & volunteers)

PLANT SELECTION FOR THE UPSTATE - September 27
Fall provides ideal growing conditions for plant establishment and growth, with warm soil temperatures and adequate moisture. We’ll talk about selecting plants that will thrive in your landscape, whether it’s sun or shade, and how to choose plants that will suit your needs and gardening style. This program is designed for beginning and intermediate gardeners who’d like to expand their gardening skills.

Fee: $12 includes a behind-the-scenes SCBG plant sale preview ($10 for SCBG members & volunteers)

FALL PLANT SALE - September 28 & 29
Fall is peak planting time and we've got the best selection of plants around. From perennials, shade-loving plants, natives, trees, shrubs and orchids, you'll find what your garden or landscape needs to make it the talk of the town.

Saturday, 9/29: Public Plant Sale - 9am-1pm
Friends membership starts at just $35 annual donation and is tax deductible. Guests attending the Friends Preview Plant Sale must be Friends members to enter. Public Sale is free admission.

Containers and window boxes don't have to be bare in winter, or rely only on pansies or ornamental kale. Get inspired to brighten up fall and winter in this program. Mising evergreen perennials, herbs, and hardy greens in interesting combinations with evergreen sedges, conifers, and grasses will perk up your containers on a winter porch or entryway.

Interested in growing plants from cuttins, starting plants from seed, and learning about the basics of plant division? Join horticulturist and SCBG Nursery Manager Ryan Merck for a demonstration-based workshop focused on plant propagation. Ryan is responsible for the Garden's excellent biannual plant sales as well as going propagation and plant production for SCBG landscapes.

Come on out to the South Carolina Botanical Garden for a day filled with harvests, history and harps as we celebrate Thomas Green Clemson’s 200th birthday. The day starts with a Harvest Festival at the Heirloom Vegetable Garden beside the historic Hanover House. There will be farm equipment and seed harvesting demonstrations as well as tastings of heirloom vegetables. Antique tools, storytelling, and blue-grass music will also be a part of the morning. Local grown and produced food will be available to purchase for lunch. At the other end of the Garden at 1:00 join us for the dedication of the new Cherokee Garden. Native American Dancers and storytellers will be on hand to help us learn more about the first inhabitants of our Garden. Also starting at 1:00 the Bob Campbell Geology Museum will be opening up their new exhibit on Thomas Green Clemson and his strong link to mining. There will be t-shirt painting, jewelry making demonstrations, and other fun with rocks and fossils. Finally, starting at 3:00 and lasting until 6:00 there will be a series of musical performances at the Garden Amphitheater. South Carolina musicians will be playing music composed by South Carolinians – including some pieces written by Clemson himself! And if all that wasn’t enough, canning and preserving exhibits at the Hunt Cabin and entertaining educational sessions will be held at the Hayden Conference Center throughout the day. And other than lunch, its all FREE. So, bring your kids and cooler and come spend the day with us. The South Carolina Botanical Garden – we’re not just about flowers anymore.Hours: 9am-6pm

Our area's lakes present a number of challenges to prevent erosion but provide a stable and ecologically sound lakeshore. Join Dr. Larry Dyck to learn about ways to use tough and attractive native plants to effectively restore a functioning shoreline. He'll combine a presentation with a first-hand look at some of the best native plants to use. Larry has an ongoing, active research and consulting program on lakeshore restoration and speaks frequently about shoreline and watershed issues. Larry is Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences, Clemson University.

Last summer's record heat and continuing drought was a stress for many plants, including many usually tough species in our gardens and natural areas. In this program, Karen Russ, Horticulture Specialist for the CU Home and Garden Information Center, will discuss how to choose drought-tolerant plants for different areas and the different strategies that drought-tolerant plants use. Then, we'll talk about how to make your garden less reliant on additional water through careful plant selection and mulching. This program will be a combination of an illustrated presentation and interactive discussion.

Ecuador has long been deservedly a favorite ecotourism destination because of the Galapagos Islands, the diversity of its mountains, and richness of its Amazonian basin headwaters. Lisa Wagner and her husband Tim Spira discovered the impressive biodiversity of the Andean highlands on a recent winter trip and found it full of amazing natural areas, traveling from teh El Angel Reserve near the Guatemalan border to the paramos on the flaks of some of Ecuador's largest volcanoes to sub-tropical cloud forests. Join Lisa to share some of the images and experiences of visiting a fascinating part of the world an discover why they want to retrun for a longer period.

Flow Yoga class focuses on ashtanga vinyasa style yoga and provides a well rounded workout to yoga students. This style of yoga challenges students of all levels and abilities through a sequence of postures that build strength and flexibility. The breathwork and meditation practiced in class reduces stress, induces relaxation, and brings clarity of mind. Renee is a practitioner of ashtanga vinyasa yoga and encourages all students to strive for a sense of wholeness and appreciation for where and who they are. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes. Class size is limited to 12 students per session so, pre-registration is suggested though drop-ins are welcome. The Nature of Quilts Exhibit July 2 - September 30 This exhibit is sure to dazzle you and inspire your creativity. These two talented quilters have mastered the range of traditional to contemporary quilt design. Dixie Haywood, "Who's Who of American Quilters", is known for her foundation work and has authored several books on the subject. Dottie Moore concentrates on the inspiration of nature in her designs. Join us as we celebrate South Carolina quilters in this special exhibit. The artists will also be teaching on July 21! |
