Corn maze promotes education
Clemson University has created a corn maze to promote
the value of learning to elementary school students from throughout
the Pee Dee region of South Carolina. Using global positioning technologies,
the maze was designed and established by university scientists Sue
Robinson and Jim Frederick at Clemson's Pee Dee Research and Education
Center located near Florence, SC.
In early October, more than 2000 students from grades
1 through 4 will visit the maze to learn more about both agriculture
and the value of an education.Clemson professor and School Tour
Coordinator Don Manley explains, "There is a critical need
for children to learn that food and fiber products do not originate
from Wal-Mart. Agriculture is also a very important industry to
the economy of South Carolina."
The maze was designed to lead children through the
corn field using a series of educational questions placed at various
points within the maze. Selecting the wrong answer leads the children
to a dead end. "We want to show the kids that life, like the
maze, is full of choices," notes Frederick, "they can
make either the right or wrong choice. We hope they learn that the
right choice is to study hard and learn as much as they can."
