Genomics
Mapping
DNA to improve crops
Today, most people in the United States and other developed countries
enjoy an abundance of food. But there are millions of people in
developing countries whose basic nutritional needs are not being
met.
As the human
population expands, primarily in the developing countries, people
are consuming both food and the land resources needed to produce
that food. This means that in the future, farmers must produce more
food, with higher nutritional content, on less land. A worldwide
effort has begun to address this critical need and Clemson researchers
are in the forefront of the science known as genomics.
Genomics
research is funded through Clemson
University Agriculture and Forestry Research by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture, the National
Science Foundation, the South
Carolina General Assembly, and other agencies.
