Cancer-fighting compounds found in berries
In another study, beneficial compounds extracted from raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries were found to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in laboratory tests. Clemson scientists worked with colleagues at the USDA Natural Products Laboratory in Mississippi to test the compounds’ anti-cancer components against aggressive cervical cancer lines and two forms of breast cancer. The tests showed that these compounds also block production of mutations that can cause cancer. Additional work is needed to identify the specific components and how they function to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
