Low-fat milk feed supplement

low-fat milkResearch produces low-fat milk while it's in the cow
Clemson researchers are lowering the saturated fat content in milk — while it’s still in the cow — by adding fatty acid to the cow’s diet. The scientists developed a patented feed formula that combines fatty acid and ammonia.

The formula works with the natural chemicals and processes in the cow’s digestive system to lower the overall fat content in the milk. In addition, it changes the remaining fat to the more healthful monounsaturated form found in canola or olive oil. When the milk was fed to rats, it significantly reduced their weight gain and fat accumulation. Now the scientists are seeking to determine exactly how the change in fatty acids occurs.
