Children and Weight SummitMarch 27, 2003 Local Coalition Report: Barnwell / Bamberg / Calhoun Counties Facilitator: Gloria Jenkins Recorder: Dee Nettles How aware are you of the problem of childhood overweight in our community? What evidence do you see in your work? Outside your work setting? Very aware. This is a problem that our medical staff has taken a long look at the need to get kids more active and promote nutrition. We see the growing medical problems What’s happening in our community that supports healthy eating among children? What needs to be changed to help children eat better? • Parent organization’s to improve school
lunch What’s happening on our community that supports physical activity among children? What needs to be changed to help children be more physically active? We need to discourage physical activity as a problem of overweight and concentrate on promoting it as Fun! Generations Unlimited has started after school programs to encourage aerobic and hydraulic equipment exercise program. Are you or your organization currently working on the issue of childhood overweight? What is being done? Yes, Kidz Club and working with DHEC and medical staff to incorporate new ideas to encourage the family to be more active What resources already exist in our community
that can be used to help families eat better and be more active? Would you be interested in participating in a community coalition to address this issue? List other individuals or organization who may be willing to participate.
