Local Coalition Report: Pickens County

How aware are you of the problem of childhood overweight in our community? What evidence do you see in your work? Outside your work setting?

• 4-H Youth Kids in the kitchen – very aware, not as active, poor self esteem
PHBE – referrals / HS – kids choose poor eating habits / 1st Steps Families / YMCA – involvement / common problem
• Outside – everywhere / Clemson – bus not walking – cultural desks too small – too hilly, out of breath / habitual – time too busy

What’s happening in our community that supports healthy eating among children? What needs to be changed to help children eat better?

• Team Nutrition Program – schools, fat, frt., veg, frying
• Needs – expectations / ability to generate revenues / parents / siblings are key / needs to be caol / age appropriate

What’s happening on our community that supports physical activity among children? What needs to be changed to help children be more physically active?

• YMCA’s, walking trail at hospital
• Need – everyday activity
• Safety is an issue
• PE time – Liberty High – required / semester 30 min. ion elementary after school care til 5:30 – little physical activity
• More focused physical activities; local rec centers redefining fitness – fun and active

Are you or your organization currently working on the issue of childhood overweight? What is being done?

• Clemson Extension / Y / PHBE - $10,000 grant for 4th, 5th grade (2 week day camp)
• Healthy Eating – activity
• PCWD – heavy parents – heavy children
• Kirby – research into food issues

What resources already exist in our community that can be used to help families eat better and be more active?

• Hospital, Y, Clemson Extension, parks, churches, farmer’s market, health department
• Healthy partners PC, Walk Across SC, Pickens County
• Walks – MOD
• Walk to school – web page
• Education level of PC
• Pedometers
• Daycare – need to encourage activity
