Local Coalition Report: Spartanburg

How aware are you of the problem of childhood overweight in our community? What evidence do you see in your work? Outside your work setting?

• Higher % of overweight kids in school
• Body image (Larger) has been accepted
• We know we need data on our county such as YRBBS (@USC)
• Portion sizes have change
• Health foods more price

What’s happening in our community that supports healthy eating among children? What needs to be changed to help children eat better?

• Spartanburg County Schools currently offer only 1% and skim milk (District 1,2,3,4,5,6,7). Spartanburg Co. Nutrition council has standards based nutrition curriculum (in 52 classrooms)
• Safer school booklet (Heartwise) currently in one district – walking to schools programs
• Needs to change: vending in school, sodas, positive media marketing

What’s happening on our community that supports physical activity among children? What needs to be changed to help children be more physically active?

• “Walk to School” implemented in one district
• Spartanburg Running Club (training in school)
• Options in PE (running, walking vs. organized sports
• STEP classes in schools
• Safety of local parks in Spartanburg (increased)
• Changes: church – after school program

Are you or your organization currently working on the issue of childhood overweight? What is being done?

• One RN works with school system
• Education
• Walk to school program
• Curriculum – assessments
• Nutrition education curriculum. (School food service)
• “Chart Busters” fun and fitness (school food service district 6)
• Nutrition council

What resources already exit in our community that can be used to help families eat better and be more active?

• Nutrition council (Spartanburg)
• Heart Wise
• Extension
• Mall (walking)
• Spartanburg Regional/Marg Black Hospital – free health screenings

Would you be interested in participating in a community coalition to address this issue? List other individuals or organizations who may be willing to participate.

• All groups interested: Include Parks and Recreation, YMCA
