Children and Weight Summit

How aware are you of the problem of childhood overweight in our community? What evidence do you see in your work? Outside your work setting?

There are children overweight – Seen in all ages, all communities. Most diabetes is seen in children – lack of physical activity – especially with boys – other health problems are also seen in the PD(?) (PD is top in the state in heart disease, obesity, diabetes.) race is a determining factor

What’s happening in our community that supports healthy eating among children? What needs to be changed to help children eat better?

• 4-H, 5/Day, Kid Win (Hospital)
• Sheriff’s department – 7MU – working with youth, lots of physical activity – Public Schools
• PSA’s – to promote Healthy Eating – Encourage families to cook – Add calories to menus at Fast Food restaurants. Focus on families eating right. Promote through churches and schools.

What’s happening on our community that supports physical activity among children? What needs to be changed to help children be more physically active?

• Sport programs in schools and country rec - departments
• Walking trails in Florence – YMCA – schools pay to join the Y.
• Have taken a lot of physical activity out of school - energy
• More recess activity – Encourage youth not interested in competition
• Sports to be more active – Churches put in playground equipment – from an after school program to promote activity in summer have activities at funding (?) sites.

Are you or your organization currently working on the issue of childhood overweight? What is being done?

• First Steps – promoting healthy eating
• After school – promotes nutrition and physical activity
• Link program E71VEP – (Hospital (Kids Win)

What resources already exit in our community that can be used to help families eat better and be more active?

Churches, hospitals, Clemson extension, E7NEP, YMCA, First Steps, Schools, FCC
