PURPOSE: To introduce teachers to the Principles of Wildlife Conservation, and key management programs in South Carolina.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: This workshop is designed to (1) enhance a teacher’s understanding of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology, and (2) demonstrated how these principles are used in the scientific management of South Carolina’s abundant wildlife resources.

EXTERNAL PARTNERS: SC Chapter of The Wildlife Society, SC Department of Natural Resources, Nemours Wildlife Foundation

INTENDED OUTCOMES: (1) Teachers will gain an understanding of the biological impacts of past and current conservation practices on the wildlife resources in South Carolina, (2) as well as an appreciation for the diversity and complexity of current wildlife conservation efforts in the state. They will also obtain an average of 12 contacts with state agency biologists for future cooperative education efforts.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: This workshop is entering its 17th year and has had over 400 graduates primarily from the Southeast, but some from the Northeast, and foreign countries as well.

FUNDING: Partially funded from grants (Primarily has been the Harry Hampton Fund with SCDNR, but also has included SC Science Hubs, and now USFWS), with remainder paid by participants. Grants typically pay about 66% of the costs.
