Brief description of program:
Program Purpose:
The program purpose is to promote community service in the area of youth development as a means of preparing university students for their role as responsible citizens and future community leaders. Clemson undergraduate students selected as Campbell Scholars serve as leaders and role models for youth. In addition to tutoring elementary and middle school children at their schools, the Scholars also participate in after –school enrichment programs and summer youth camps. There are currently ten Scholars, with four more to be selected for Fall 2002.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Provide scholarship assistance to Clemson University to undergraduate students who have shown: (1) a demonstrated commitment to community service, particularly in the area of youth development; (2) financial need; and (3) academic achievement and promise ( SAT scores and high school class rank/ GPA).
  • Promote active engagement of Clemson University undergraduate students with youth and educators in selected schools in the Greenville, SC area and the greater Clemson area.
  • Create an intergenerational learning community composed of elementary and/or middle school students, the teachers and educators in their respective schools, and selected Clemson University undergraduate students

Internal/External Partners: The Campbell Young Leaders Corporation, Cone Primary School (Greenville, SC); Sans Souci Elementary School ( Greenville, SC); Lakeview Middle School ( Greenville, SC); currently in negotiation with a middle school in Oconee County to expand partnership.

Intended Outcomes:

  • Increased opportunities for involvement/engagement with K-12 youth in local communities for Clemson undergraduate students
  • Integration of public/community service with the Clemson University undergraduate learning experience
