Courses and Registration Overview

Information about classes offered each term can be found on this page. Need help? Connect with Carla Brewer, registration coordinator for the Department of Biological Sciences. Her office is located in Long Hall 127. Important note: BIOL 1050 and 1101 in fall and BIOL 1060 and 1111 in spring: Day labs are reserved for freshman due to common exam testing in the evenings. Upperclassman will need to register for the evening labs.

Anatomy and Physiology I and II

  • Course: BIOL 2220/2221 (fall); BIOL 2230/2231 (spring).
  • Credits: 4.
  • Biol 2220, 2221 also offered in Summer Session I.
  • Biol 2230, 2231 also offered in Summer Session II.

Note: BIOL 2220 and 2230 serves as elective credit only for all biological sciences and microbiology students, with the exception of B.A. biological sciences (prerehabilitation sciences emphasis).

Prerequisite Information

Contact the instructor of record by email if you don’t meet the prerequisite, requesting entrance and taking full responsibility of material without preq. Preq overrides will not be given without the instructor of record’s consent. Two examples follow for students to email instructors for approval:

“I do recognize that I do not have the prerequisite classes for BIOL 2220 and understand that I am putting myself at a disadvantage when taking this course. I understand that I may need to work harder for my grade and take full responsibility for doing so.”

Or,

“I am aware that taking the courses out of sequence could put me at a significant disadvantages and that I accept responsibility for identifying areas of weakness and working to overcome them.”

Restricted By Field of Study

The majors that require the course for their curriculum in order to graduate from Clemson are allowed to register for the course during registration. Majors that do not require the course within their curriculum are restricted.

Students meeting any one of the following criteria may submit a request to enroll in BIOL 2220 or 2230:

  • A&P as an option (but not required) in their curriculum.
  • Change of major students.
  • Post-graduation requirements.
  • Preparing for the MCAT test.
  • Shadowing a major where A&P is required.

Once early registration is over, the registration coordinator will work on registering these students into the course upon availability of seats. Notification of enrollment will be sent via email from the registration coordinator.

Cross-Listed (Linked) Sections

  • Courses: BIOL 4xx0, 4xx1.
  • Credits: 2.

The lab consists of both 4xx0, lecture portion and 4xx1, noncredit laboratory to accompany 4xx0. So, students must register for the same section numbers of 4xx0 and 4xx1. Click on the course reference number to see the cross listing (pairing).

Both CRNs have to be registered at the same time when registering. As a general rule, the lecture portion of the lab immediately precedes the non-credit laboratory.

Clinical Applications and Medical Practices

  • Course: BIOL 4890/4891.
  • Credit: 3.
  • Fall semester offering: Medical emphasis, one section
  • Spring semester offering: medical emphasis, one section and dental emphasis, one section.
  • Not offered in the summer term.
  • Requires consent of instructor.
  • Enrollment selected by application process.

Each semester, usually two months before early registration, a flyer is sent to undergraduate major email lists advertising the course and designating the deadline date to apply. Applications are accepted for about a one-month time period as designated on the flyer. Application cover page and a one-page essay need to be email submitted to the registration coordinator during this time period.

Applications are turned over to instructor of record who will review and select students to interview. The interview process takes place during the month before early registration. Upon final selection from the instructor of record, the registration coordinator will grant overrides for accepted students to register. Notification by email of override granted will be sent to selected students by registration coordinator.

Students can register during early registration.

Creative Inquiry

Two courses of Creative Inquiry are available.

Internship

  • Course: BIOL or MICR 4920.
  • Variable credit: 0 to 4.
  • Fall or spring term offering.
  • Offered during summer term; see notes, below.
  • Requires consent of instructor.

For fall or spring terms:

A student contacts the internship mentor directly to apply for internship opportunities at an institution. The student then completes the internship contract, signs it and secures the signature of the supervisor from the internship institute. The instructor of record for BIOL/MICR 4920 needs to approve the internship for credit prior to the internship starting. Email the instructor of record a brief outline of internship (needs to be more than shadowing a doctor) to ask for approval to take BIOL/MICR 4920 for credit.

Upon approval, the registration coordinator will grant the override for student to register.

No credit will be given for internships that were not agreed upon in advance by instructor of record for BIOL/MICR 4920. This contract is not accepted retroactively, or after the last day to add a class.

A student submits the internship contract and study plan — with the number of credits desired — to the registration coordinator before the beginning of the semester in which the internship will take place. One credit is given for every 45 hours of work, up to four credits in a semester. Submitthe registration coordinator or visit Long Hall 127.

The final report and supervisor evaluation will be submitted to the registration coordinator the last week of classes before final exams start. The internship instructor of record will grade the internship and submit a grade of pass/fail at grade collection time.

Notes on summer semester:

The same rules apply for the summer term, with the following difference: In order to get credit for a summer internship, students must register and pay for the desired number of summer school credits. Information regarding summer tuition can be found on the financial services website.

Credit options for summer registration:

  • Register for zero credits: Students do not pay tuition and the internship is on transcript with no academic credit.
  • Register for one to four credits: Students pay tuition and the internship is on transcript with academic credit.

Service Learning

  • Course: BIOL or MICR 4950.
  • Variable credit: 2 to 4.
  • Fall or spring term offering.
  • Not offered summer term.
  • Requires consent of instructor.

Student must contact the instructor of record to gain permission to take Service Learning with that instructor. Upon approval, the information required for the registration coordinator to grant override is as follows:

  • Service Learning section and instructor.
  • Name.
  • CID.

Then, email the information to the registration coordinator.

The default credit is the minimum credit allowed, which is two credits in this course. The student will need to change the default credit of two after registering for the section if the agreed upon credit is three or four.

Introductory Microbiology

  • Course: MICR 2050/2051 — transfer course.
  • Credits: 4.
  • Fall semester offering only.
  • Recommended for students not majoring in biological sciences; not open to microbiology majors.

In order to fulfill the MICR 3050 requirement the student must take a special examination to earn exemption credit for MICR 3050. Students with transfer credit of MICR 2050 are encouraged to seek special examination credit as early as possible in case they do not pass and must register for MICR 3050. To request a special examination, email Londan Means.

  • Non-microbiology majors restricted to lecture section 001 or 002 and lab sections 004–014.

No Waitlists on BIOL or MICR Courses

This applies to all terms.

During early registration, if a course closes there will be no waitlist available from the add/drop area. Students will need to use the Request Closed Course function in iROAR, if there are courses they cannot register for, but would like to take. This feature will only display courses where the maximum enrollment has been reached. They can access the closed course function via iROAR —» Student —» Registration —» Request Closed Course.
