When should I sign up for advising?

Advising can begin up to a month before registration. Some advisors have many students and must begin early to accommodate all of them. Faculty advisors have limited time for advising as they are teaching and conducting research in addition to their advising duties. For the best selection of advising appointments, please schedule your advising appointment early.

What if I don’t know who my advisor is?

You can lookup your advisor’s name in iROAR.  Click Student Tab>Student Records Tab> Select Degree Works. Your advisor’s name is displayed on the screen. You can click the name to send an email or go to the Clemson University phone book for office location and/or phone number. Please see your assigned advisor if at all possible.

How do I sign up for advising?

Each advisor schedules advising appointments differently. Contact your advisor to determine if they take walk-ins or schedule appointments. Some advisors have sign up sheets outside their office while other advisors use electronic calendars.

How do I request to change my advisor?

You may request a new advisor by making an appointment with the Advising Center. Advisor changes will not be made the month before registration or during the registration period as this time is very busy.

How do I request a course substitution?

To request a course substitution please make an appointment with the Advising Center at non-peak advising times. Avoid the month before the registration period through registration. Course substitutions should be requested as soon as the course is graded unless the course is being taken during your graduating term. If the course is being taken during your graduating term please schedule your appointment after registering for the course.

What if I want to take a course at another school?

Students should complete a Approval for Work to be Taken Elsewhere form prior to taking the course. Complete the top portion of the form and bring it to your advisor for their signature. To determine the course number at another institution consult the Transfer Course Equivalency Lookup (TCEL). If you cannot find the course in the TCEL you will need to provide a syllabus to the instructor that teaches the course at Clemson. The instructor will need to sign the course equivalency certification box on the Work to be Taken Elsewhere form.

Students in their Junior year or later must be cautious when taking courses at another institution. 37 of the last 43 credits presented toward your degree must be taken at Clemson University. 3000 level or higher courses must be taken at a University and not at a Technical College or Community College.

How do I request Academic Forgiveness?
Please schedule an appointment with your advisor. You cannot receive academic forgiveness for a course until a final grade has posted. After grades have posted your advisor can help you complete the academic forgiveness form. Although academic forgiveness removes the effect of a D or F from your GPA, the original grade will remain on your academic transcript. Academic forgiveness can have an impact on financial aid, and it is recommended that you consult with the Financial Aid office (G01 Sikes Hall; finaid@clemson.edu.)

How do I contact the advising center?
The Advising Center is located on the first floor of Long Hall. You may contact the Advising Center by e-mail at londanm@clemson.edu or by phone at (864) 656-3604.
