Energy has never been more important to the state of South Carolina, the United States, and the world than it is today. Three factors have combined to drive the need for new energy solutions. These factors are:

- The substantial growth in energy demand, particularly in large developing countries like China and India,
- The dwindling supply of fossil fuels that we have depended on for the past 100 years, and
- The increased concern over green house gas emissions and pollution.
