COASTAL WIND RESOURCE ASSESSMENT

While offshore winds offer the greatest potential for electricity production in South Carolina, our coastal areas also have promise. As of 2006, over 11,600 MW of land based wind capacity has been installed in the US, mostly in the Midwest, West, and Northeast.

SCIES currently is installing monitoring equipment at several coastal sites to quantify available wind resources. Installations exist at Waties Island and North Charleston, with future plans for a site near Georgetown.
