Clemson University, through the South Carolina Institute for Energy Studies, hosted the National University Security Workshop II. The workshop was held at the Conference Center & Inn at Clemson University August 30-September 1, 2004.
WORKSHOP FOCUS
This workshop provided an opportunity for senior academic executives, research officers, security officers, facility managers and faculty involved in security to gather and share concerns particular to universities. The workshop explored what universities and colleges already do to make a secure academic, research, and cultural environment.

Breakout Session I-Security for The College Campus
Mary Poore, Associate Vice President for Municipal Services at Clemson University, was the discussion leader for a daylong breakout session on security for the college campus. Topics included campus access and control, new technologies, health concerns along with other issues that campus security faces everyday. The format allowed everyone to voice their particular concerns in open discussion with the entire group.
Breakout Session II-Security Considerations for Animal Research Farms
Dr. Greg Queen, Acting Director of the Office of Research Compliance and University Veterinarian, facilitated a field exercise and classroom discussion on maintaining security in and around university livestock exhibition centers and animal research farms. Attendees visited Clemson University field sites to assess risk potentials and then proceed to the classroom to devise a realistic plan to respond to a theoretical emergency. Participants were encouraged to develop and exchange ideas regarding responding to the challenges of security at off-campus animal research/exhibition sites of a teaching institution.
